Badaling Great Wall
By Great Wall Archive · Updated June 2026
Badaling is the most visited and most accessible section of the Great Wall, about 70 km northwest of central Beijing in Yanqing District. It is a heavily restored stretch of the Ming wall with broad, even ramparts and a cable car, which makes it the easiest section to walk and the busiest. If you want the classic Great Wall view with the least logistical effort, Badaling is the default choice; if you want solitude, choose Jinshanling or Simatai instead.
Why visit Badaling
- The most restored and wheelchair-adjacent section, with a cable car and gentle graded paths near the entrance.
- Directly above the historic Juyong Pass corridor, the strategic gateway to Beijing.
- The earliest section opened to the public and the one most heads of state have visited.
- Best paired with the Juyongguan pass nearby for the military-geography story.
Getting there from Beijing
The simplest options are the suburban railway and the tourist bus. The S2 line runs from Huangtudian / Beijing North toward Badaling and drops you near the site; the 877 express bus runs from Deshengmen in central Beijing. Many visitors also take a half-day guided coach tour, which removes the transfer logistics. Driving is possible but parking fills early on weekends and holidays.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn give the most comfortable walking weather and the clearest air; late September to early November is especially good for colour. Arrive at opening time to walk ahead of the coach crowds, which build through the late morning. Avoid the first week of October (the national holiday) when the section is at its most crowded.
On the wall
From the entrance the wall climbs steeply in both directions; the northern run to the highest tower is the popular climb. The surface is solid and stepped, but the grade is real, wear proper shoes and carry water in summer. A cable car serves the northern side for those who prefer to skip the climb up.

Frequently asked
- Is Badaling worth visiting or is it too crowded?
- Badaling is worth it for first-time visitors who want the easiest, most complete Great Wall experience near Beijing. It is genuinely crowded, so arrive at opening time or choose a weekday; if crowds are a dealbreaker, Jinshanling or Mutianyu are quieter alternatives.
- How do I get to Badaling from Beijing without a tour?
- Take the S2 suburban train from Beijing North/Huangtudian toward Badaling, or the 877 express bus from Deshengmen. Both reach the site in roughly 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and schedule.
- Is Badaling suitable for older visitors or limited mobility?
- Badaling is the most accessible section, with a cable car and graded paths near the entrance, but the wall itself is steep beyond the first stretch. The lower section and viewpoints are manageable for many visitors who cannot do a full climb.
- How long do you need at Badaling?
- Most visitors spend two to three hours on the wall. Add travel time of one to one and a half hours each way from central Beijing.
